Tools You’ll Need
- A steel measuring tape
- Pen/pencil
- A piece of paper
Pre-Measurement Do’s
- Use a steel measuring tape for accuracy and ease of handling.
- Take measurements of RV windows at 3 different places for both width and height (w x h).
- Use the width by height (w x h) format to avoid mixing up recorded values.
- If you’re replacing existing RV blinds with new ones, make sure to measure the window frame itself, not the old blinds.
- If you want to mount new blinds inside the RV window frame, do check minimum depth.
Measuring RV Windows for Inside Mount RV Blinds & Shades
Measuring the width
- Measure the width of the RV window at three points: top, middle, and bottom.
- Use the smallest value as the actual width of your travel trailer’s window.
- For example, if the width measures 24 inches at the top, 24 inches in the middle, and 23 ¾ inches at the bottom, use 23 ¾ inches value to order new RV shades and blinds.
- For vertical blinds and solar shades, record the width at the top only
Measuring the height
- Measure the height of the RV window top down on the right, middle, and left.
- Use the smallest value as the actual height of your RV’s window frame or casing.
- For example, if the height measures 36 ⅝ inches on left, 37 inches in the middle, and 37 inches on the right, use 36 ⅝” value for ordering camper window coverings.
Measuring the depth
- Accurately measure the depth of the travel trailer’s window frame from the glass to the front of the opening.
- Check product specifications for minimum depth or mounting surface requirements for an inside mount window treatment.
Note:
- We’ll make inside mount deductions for you to ensure a perfect fit.
- Don’t go for an inside mount if your RV window’s recess does not meet the minimum depth or mounting surface requirements.
Measuring RV Windows for Outside Mount RV Blinds & Shades
The measurement procedure for an outside mount RV blind is almost the same as for an inside mount. However, the following are some important things to be taken care of.
- Use the largest measurement values for both the width and height of your RV’s window frame.
- Add 3 to 4” to both the width and height for maximum light coverage, privacy, insulation, and curb appeal.
- You don’t need to measure the RV window's depth or recess for outside mount window coverings.
- No deductions/additions will be made for outside mount motorhome window blinds.
- Make sure you have enough flat surface on the RV window molding or wall above the window for the mounting hardware of the product.
- If you have a protruding window sill in your recreational vehicle (mobile home), do not add length to the bottom.
FAQs
How can I tell what size blinds I need?
Measure both the width and height of the window and consider adding an extra 3-4 inches to the width and height for optimum light control and privacy. Extending the blinds outside the window opening will also provide space needed for mounting blinds and help the RV window appear larger than it is.
How to measure for RV curtains?
When measuring for RV curtains, we recommend measuring the width of the metal frame around the RV window from outside edge to outside edge of framing. Repeat the same step to get the value for the length/height of the window.
Summing Up
When measuring RV windows for blinds, measure the width at 3 different places and use the smallest value. Then measure the height at 3 different places and use the smallest measurement. Measure the depth of the window opening if you plan to mount RV blinds inside the windows.
